When you think about Amazon, you might picture a brown box on your doorstep. We think almost obsessively about our boxes—specifically about how to make them lighter and with fewer packaging materials—or how to ship your item without a box at all. And we’re making progress. Since 2015, we’ve avoided 5.4 million metric tons of packaging in North America and Europe. (Want to see how? Watch the video above.)
That kind of innovation defines how we approach everything we do, from delivering packages to designing data centers with custom chips and advanced cooling systems. For more than a decade, we’ve been building a science-based approach to sustainability, including co-founding The Climate Pledge in 2019, a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Our 2025 Sustainability Report illustrates the work our teams are doing to contribute to that work to make Amazon a more sustainable company. It also reflects the momentum and complexity of this moment in which AI is unlocking solutions at an unprecedented scale while also creating new demands for energy, water, and infrastructure. From minimizing packaging materials and expanding our electric vehicle fleets to designing more efficient data centers, we’re working to align innovation with sustainability at every level of the business.
This year, we’ve also taken extra time to better understand how readers interact with the report and what they hope to learn from it. Read on for answers to some of the most searched questions we’ve seen.

- What is sustainability reporting?
Sustainability reporting is the practice of disclosing a company’s environmental, social, and governance performance and impacts. Amazon uses frameworks including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) to inform our reporting approach. As a signatory of The Climate Pledge, Amazon is committed to publicly reporting our emissions on an annual basis.

- How are business and sustainability connected?
Business and sustainability go hand in hand. What’s good for the planet—using resources efficiently, wasting less, and saving more—is good for business. By adopting more sustainable practices, businesses can help address climate change and reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the inspiration behind The Climate Pledge, a cross-sector community of companies working together to address the climate crisis and solve the challenge of decarbonizing our economy.
- What topics are included in Amazon’s Sustainability Report?
Amazon’s Sustainability Report covers more than a dozen subjects: AI for sustainability, climate and energy, water, waste and circularity, packaging, biodiversity, sustainable shopping, human rights, employee experience, health and safety, responsible supply chain, communities, and responsible business practices.
