Amazon devices

Part of our mission to be Earth’s most customer-centric company is to offer more sustainable devices without compromising on quality or cost. This includes designing our devices with carbon reduction in mind and manufacturing them using responsibly sourced materials. It also involves confirming the sustainable credentials of our devices with trusted third-party certifications.

Designing for sustainability

We’re working to make Amazon devices more sustainable—from how we build them to how customers use them. We design our devices with best-in-class reliability models so they’re more resilient, last longer, and don’t need to be replaced as often.

Reducing the carbon impact of our devices

We measure carbon emissions throughout the lifecycle of our devices—from production, through customer use, to disposal. We aim for each generation of Amazon devices to be more carbon-efficient than the last.

    We became the first consumer electronics company to commit to addressing the electricity used by our devices through renewable energy development, starting with our Echo devices.

    We set a goal to invest in new renewable energy capacity to match the electricity used by our customers’ Echo, Fire TV and Ring devices by 2025. By 2022, we had contracted enough renewable energy capacity to match our 2025 projections. In 2024, when this capacity was brought online, we matched the electricity used by active Echo, Fire TV and Ring devices—a full year ahead of our goal.

    We published “Decarbonizing and Neutralizing the Use Phase of Connected Devices” to share learnings that shaped how we design our products. The paper focuses on how we’re integrating carbon-reduction strategies so others can use our expertise to make more sustainable products for their customers.

    Many of our devices offer a Low Power Mode feature, which reduces energy consumption when the device is idle. By the end of 2024, over 71% of Echo devices and Fire TVs featured Low Power Mode, compared to 67% in 2023. We continue to issue over-the-air updates so that older devices can also use this feature.

Using recycled materials

By the end of 2024, various components across Echo, Fire TV, Fire tablets, and Kindle were made from a majority of—or all—recycled materials. These included 58% recycled plastic, 100% recycled yarn, 100% recycled aluminum, and 90% recycled magnesium. In 2024, we also launched 25 new devices and accessories with a SCS Recycled Content or a Carbon Trust certification, recognized by our Climate Pledge Friendly program.
In addition, we aim to use more recycled materials when sourcing minerals for our electronic products. In 2024, we introduced the new Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition e-reader with a battery made from 100% recycled cobalt and the Echo Hub Smart Home Control Panel with magnets made from 100% recycled rare earth elements.

ChemFORWARD partnership

To advance the move to safer chemistry, we joined ChemFORWARD. Through this collaboration, we’re working with industry peers to proactively identify harmful chemicals and safer alternatives ahead of regulations.

Effortlessly optimize your indoor climate

Alexa can automatically adjust your Amazon Smart Thermostat’s set point by one degree to align with lower emissions moments on the power grid without compromising your comfort.

You’re always in control

Alexa can make optimization adjustments, but you can manually override at any time to maximize comfort and control.

Carbon impact insights for everyone

You can also view current and forecasted emission levels in your area in the Energy Dashboard so you can plan to use electricity on other large appliances in your home, like your dishwasher, when CO2 emissions are lower.

How it works

To enable this feature, select your thermostat device in the Amazon Alexa app. Then, tap the Settings icon. Then, tap Choose Cleaner Energy.

Automatic actions

You can enable Alexa to help conserve energy with automatic actions. For example, if Alexa has a Hunch that you're away from home, Alexa can automatically adjust your Amazon smart thermostat to your preferred away temperature, helping you save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

Extending our impact

To drive change beyond our business, we look for ways to share learnings and innovations that have shaped the way we design our products. This allows others to use our expertise and make more­ sustainable products for their own customers. 

In 2022, we published a paper called Decarbonizing and Neutralizing the Use Phase of Connected Devices. The paper focuses on how we're integrating carbon-reduction strategies across the use phase of our devices. 

We invite other companies and manufacturers to join the mission of driving to a net-zero carbon use phase.
