Built Together

Built Together is Amazon's investment framework for communities where we operate data centers across the United States. We're adding more than $1 billion over five years to what we're already doing, directing funds toward education, job training, energy affordability, and water preservation—with communities deciding what matters most for them.

Investing in the communities where we build

Amazon engages with communities long before a data center breaks ground and that relationship doesn’t end at construction. We're proud of the work we’ve done so far, and Built Together is a commitment to do more—with programs focused on education, job training, energy affordability, water preservation, and funding that communities direct toward the priorities they identify for themselves.

Built Together is grounded in the Amazon Data Center Commitment, a series of tenets that guide how Amazon builds and operates in every community.

Key takeaways

Here's what Built Together aims to deliver over five years. None of this happens alone—we're excited to partner with nonprofits and community organizations to drive measurable impact.

Education and workforce pathways

Building a data center is an opportunity to invest in the people nearby, through education programs and workforce training that create lasting career pathways.
  • Education

Free community college for local residents

Amazon aims to remove the cost of community college education for more than 300,000 students in communities where we operate data centers, making it easier for residents to pursue new careers and credentials close to home. Through partnerships with local community colleges, Amazon will provide funding for community members pursuing a certificate or associate's degree in high-demand fields, including electrical trades, HVAC, fiber optics, IT, healthcare, education, public safety, and advanced manufacturing—all at no cost to students with Amazon covering financial gaps (out-of-pocket costs after aid).
  • Skills training

Workforce training for jobs in the community

By the end of 2028, we plan to prepare up to 100,000 learners annually for skilled jobs in their hometowns. Amazon is building a network of 25 purpose-built modular training centers and offering free certification programs in skilled trades. Graduates earn credentials that prepare them for careers at Amazon, our construction partners, and employers across the region.

Energy affordability and water solutions

Lowering energy costs and protecting local water resources are part of being a good neighbor.
  • Efficiency upgrades

Investing in energy upgrades across the country

Over the next five years, Amazon is investing in energy efficiency upgrades aiming to benefit over 30,000 homes and more than 300 schools and buildings in communities where we operate data centers. In partnership with leading nonprofits, local utilities, and state energy offices, these upgrades are designed to lower energy costs by an estimated 20 to 40 percent. Actual savings may vary by household, and total monthly bills may still change based on energy rates, weather, and how much energy a household uses.

  • Water replenishment

    Protecting local water resources

Amazon has contracted more than 65 water replenishment projects worldwide, expected to return more than 8 billion gallons of water annually to local communities, more than double what Amazon used across all of our data centers in 2025. These projects support local water supply in partnership with dozens of local and national non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and water technology partners.

Flexible funding, led by local voices

Built Together puts communities in the driver's seat by partnering with local foundations to let residents decide how funds are invested.
  • Community-directed investments

    Partnering with communities for impact

In addition to the investments Amazon already makes in the communities where we operate, Built Together will provide millions of dollars per year to philanthropic foundations in each of those communities. Those foundations partner with residents and local organizations to direct funding where it's needed most: roads, parks, fire departments, housing, schools, disaster preparedness, and more.
