Renewable Energy

As part of our goal to reach net-zero carbon by 2040, Amazon is on a path to powering our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025—five years ahead of our original target of 2030. In 2020, we became the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, reaching 65% renewable energy across our business.
Renewable Energy by the Numbers
Amazon's renewable energy projects helped power the 24 million MWh of electricity consumed by Amazon in 2020 and led to a 4% reduction in our carbon emissions from purchased electricity from 2019 to 2020.

Largest Rooftop Solar Array in the state of Colorado
The solar array comprises more than 17,000 panels spanning 19 acres, generating enough energy to provide up to 45% of the 855,000-square-foot facility’s annual energy needs.
This project will power Amazon's Arlington headquarters, regional Whole Foods Market stores, and fulfillment centers. This project is a public-private partnership with Arlington County.
Upon its completion in 2022, the project is expected to generate 80,000 MWh of clean energy annually, enough to power more than 10,000 homes in Singapore.
The Alcalá de Guadaira solar park in Spain provides 149 MW of renewable energy for Amazon logistics facilities and AWS data centers in Spain.
Unveiled in 2020, the UK facility is outfitted with more than 11,500 solar panels, which generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 700 homes in the UK for one year.
Types of Renewable Energy Projects
Scaling up the use of renewable energy is central to Amazon’s strategy to decarbonize our operations. Clean energy sources, such as wind and solar, lessen Amazon’s reliance on fossil fuels to power our operations and the services we provide to customers. We procure new renewable energy beyond the existing grid mix through off-site contracts for wind and solar, on-site rooftop solar installations, and green tariffs with local utilities that result in new projects being added to the grid.

    Wind and Solar Projects
Amazon works with energy companies across the globe to bring on new renewable projects dedicated to serving our load. Many of these projects are enabled by long-term contracts such as power purchase agreements with large wind and solar projects in the same energy grids as our electricity use.

    On-Site Solar Systems
Amazon installs rooftop or ground mounted solar photovoltaic systems and battery storage on buildings across our operations. Depending on the specific project, time of year, and other factors, a rooftop solar system can generate as much as 80% of a single fulfillment facility’s annual energy needs.

In 2020, Amazon became the first consumer electronics company to commit to addressing the electricity used by our devices through renewable energy development, starting with our Echo devices. We are making investments in additional wind and solar farm capacity that, by 2025, will produce the clean energy equivalent to the use of all Echo, Fire TV, and Ring devices worldwide.
