Renewable Energy By the Numbers
As of December 2020, Amazon has 127 renewable energy projects across the globe that have the capacity to generate over 6,500 megawatts (MW) and deliver more than 18 million megawatt hours (MWh) of energy annually—enough to power more than 1.7 million U.S. homes.

Types of Renewable Energy Projects
To support the development and construction of new renewable energy, Amazon procures renewable energy beyond the existing grid mix.
-
Wind and Solar ProjectsAmazon works with energy companies across the globe to bring on new renewable projects dedicated to serving our load. Many of these projects are enabled by long-term contracts such as power purchase agreements with large wind and solar projects in the same energy grids as our electricity use.
-
On-Site Solar SystemsAmazon installs rooftop or ground mounted solar photovoltaic systems and battery storage on buildings across our operations. Depending on the specific project, time of year, and other factors, a rooftop solar system can generate as much as 80% of a single fulfillment facility’s annual energy needs.
Amazon was ranked #1 in the U.S. by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) for corporate on-site solar installed in 2018. These installations offset the carbon dioxide equivalent of more than 200 million miles of truck deliveries.
