The Climate Pledge
The Climate Pledge is a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge in 2019 to build a cross-sector community of companies, organizations, individuals, and partners working together to address the climate crisis and solve the challenges of decarbonizing our economy.
Amazon became the first company to sign The Climate Pledge after co-founding the initiative in 2019 with Global Optimism, a purpose-driven organization led by Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac, who oversaw the delivery of the historic Paris Agreement, the first global accord on climate change.
In the face of great peril, which is what the latest science depicts, the business community must have a clear path forward… It’s encouraging that 300 companies are committed to working together to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040 or sooner through The Climate Pledge. But 300 companies are not enough to deliver the transformation we need. I encourage all business leaders to get to grips with the science, translate it for their businesses, and enable the changes we need without delay.
Signatories of The Climate Pledge agree to three areas of action:
Named by Amazon and opened in 2021, Seattle’s history-making Climate Pledge Arena embodies the spirit of the Pledge and aims to set a new sustainability bar for the sports and events industry.
Renewable electricity from on-site solar panels and off-site renewable energy powers 100% of the arena’s operations. The stadium uses reclaimed rainwater stored in the ice rink system, a concept called “Rain to Rink,” to create the greenest ice in the National Hockey League. The original 44-million-pound roof from the previous Key Arena was reused in the construction to significantly reduce the embodied carbon of the new arena.
Partnerships enhance our impact and help support sustainability efforts beyond Amazon. We collaborate with credible, knowledgeable, and innovative industry partners around the world who share our vision.
Global OptimismGlobal Optimism believes humanity has the capacity and ingenuity to address any challenge—including the climate crisis. Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge with Global Optimism in 2019 on the conviction that global businesses are responsible, accountable, and able to act on the climate crisis. The Climate Pledge is a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040—10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.
We Mean Business CoalitionThe Climate Pledge and Global Optimism are partnering with the We Mean Business Coalition and several other organizations in the largest effort to date to mobilize the private sector to reach net-zero carbon by 2040. This partnership will demonstrate that corporate leaders can go further and faster on climate action. The Climate Pledge and We Mean Business Coalition also provide resources and support to TED Countdown, Race to Zero, and the Science Based Targets initiative, urging companies to respond to the climate crisis by setting specific, measurable targets.
